When Getting Home Quickly is All That Matters

There is a very specific, hollow kind of panic you feel when you get a phone call in the middle of the night telling you that a parent is in the hospital. My father lives in Doha, and his heart condition had suddenly worsened. I needed to get from Washington D.C. to Qatar immediately.

My mind was racing, and I couldn't focus well enough to navigate the airline websites. The last-minute fares I was seeing for anything other than economy were exorbitant, but I knew I would need to step straight off the plane and into a hospital room. I couldn't arrive completely broken from a 13-hour flight sitting upright.
